About Us

The Central Australian Aviation Museum had its beginning in 1977, following the tragic suicide flight into the Connair complex at the Alice Springs airport, on January 5th that year. A group of locals sought to recognize the sacrifice made by those who lost their lives in that terrible event. CAAM Inc. was formed, and began the long task of gathering and restoring the many displays in our museum today.
CAAM acknowledges the generous assistance of the NT Government through the Regional Museum Grants system, and also, the support of our local community.
The work of CAAM is still on-going; we continue to acquire items that are relevant in preserving the astonishing history of aviation in our harsh and isolated environment. We have gathered a large collection of films, photographs, books, manuals, and other items; as well as an extensive collection of radio and aviation hardware.
Our museum is operated predominately by volunteers, and is dedicated t o the preservation and display of the Territory’s aviation history.

The Precinct itself is located on the site of the original Alice Springs aerodrome, which was established by Eddie Connellan in 1939. The original hangar and associated buildings form the Central Australian Aviation Museum, and make up a large part of the Cultural Precinct.
